Shuffle Board Resurfacing.

05/20/12

How It's Done

1. Ready the shuffleboard:

Shuffleboards with existing finish should be screen sanded with 100 grit screen to remove small dents and other flaws that the existing shuffleboard may have.

Newly sanded boards should also be finished off with 100 grit screen or finer.

Equipment needed for the job:

Vacuum
Terrycloth towels
Applicator
Trim knife
Two foot level
Permanent marker, small tip
New shuffleboard surface

Replace markings on shuffleboard with marker as necessary.

2. Cleaning the shuffleboard:

Vacuum the cradle thoroughly. Wipe down the board as well as the cradle with a clean damp terrycloth towel. We use damp towels instead of tack cloths because this helps to reduce the static electricity charge build up.

The board will need to be wiped this way several more times before applying the new Shuffleboard surface . This is very important because any grit or dirt caught under the surface is there to stay.

3. Ready the new Shuffleboard surface :

Open the new roll of Shuffleboard surface and roll it out on the board with the release paper side up.

__________________________________________________________________

4. Peel back release paper:

From one end of the new surface, peel back approximately twelve inches of release paper and fold back.

DO NOT MAKE A HARD CREASE.

______________________________________________________________

5. Align new Shuffleboard surface with board:

With a person on each end of the shuffleboard flip the surface over so that the release paper is now face down on the board.

Do not let the twelve inches of exposed adhesive come in contact with the board.

Position the new Shuffleboard surface so that six inches of exposed adhesive could come in contact with the board surface.

_________________________________________________________________

6. Clean again:

Wipe the board with a clean damp towel where the exposed adhesive will come in contact with the board.

___________________________________________________________________

7. Position new Shuffleboard surface :

Align and center the new surface so that there is equal surface overlap on each side of the board and that a minimum of six inches of adhesive will come in contact with board. With the new Shuffleboard surface aligned, centered and pulled taut STICK DOWN THAT SIX INCHES OF EXPOSED ADHESIVE TO THE BOARD.

This step is similar to aiming a rifle. The six inches of the exposed surface adhesive is like the sight on a rifle. When the new surface is PULLED TIGHT and CENTERED FROM SIDE TO SIDE and that six inches of surface is stuck down, the Shuffleboard surface will roll out centered during the application of the surface. This is because the six inches of applied surface is aimed to the opposite end of the board on center.

___________________________________________________________________

8. Now the fun:

Roll up the free end of the Shuffleboard surface all the way to the other end of the board. You should now be able to see, under the roll of surface, the end of the release paper that was peeled back the twelve inches in figure # 4.

__________________________________________________________________

9. Choose your applicator:

The applicator can be simply a push broom,a dust mop, or a squeegee approximately as wide as the board placed on a large folded towel, as shown on the right. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE APPLICATOR`S FORWARD EDGE AS WELL THE BOTTOM IS UNIFORM AND FREE OF ANY BUMPS, DENTS, OR WRINKLES. Also pictured is a roller that is inserted into piece of foam rubber pipe insulation. They all work equally well.

__________________________________________________________________

10. Clean Board again:

Put the applicator in place, on the six inches of the surface already applied. Wipe the board again and immediately before applying the Shuffleboard surface wipe the board again with a clean damp towel.
Remember any grit, fuzz, or dirt caught under the new Shuffleboard surface is there to stay.

___________________________________________________________________

11. Apply the Shuffleboard surface :

After the applicator is in place and the board is wiped down, grab the end of the exposed twelve inch release paper and pull up and over the roll to expose more of the adhesive so that you can see the applicator through the surface. With a firm grip, hold the release paper stationary while pushing the applicator foward. The release paper should be releasing so that you can see the applicator through the surface. Push the applicator all the way to the end of the board.

__________________________________________________________________

12. Trim and prepare playing surface:

With a razor knife or a sharp trim knife, trim off the excess surface flush with sides and ends of the board. PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE PLAYING ENDS OF THE BOARD FOR SMOOTH EDGES. Clean, polish, and wax the playing surface as you prefer.
